Rumah Hutan

Rochambeau Rubbles

Why would I concern on Rochambeau apartment being demolished? Maybe I wouldn’t, just like any other foreigner living in foreign country. But I could write something about it, since I had lived there for over a year. You might read all historic backgrounds on this 100 year old building in many sites, which carry nostalgic handsome picture about the past, but living in it is a different delightful story.

We started living there on October 2003 in a one bedroom apartment, simply chosen while we’re still in our home country, with a help from a friend who already lived there. The prime reason was its location, which allowed my husband to spend 10 minutes walk to his office in Wachovia Building. We could save a lot since he would go home for lunch and we did all our activities in downtown Baltimore. Our apartment facing Franklin Street in fifth floor was appropriate; I always tried to make it clean and tidy. Moreover, we hadn’t had a car yet so it was so comfy for us to just walk out the door and roam around the city, the way of life that I love.

Did I actually love living in this building? I didn’t have much complaints other than dog-pee smell –every so often beer spills- in the elevator; a deafening drill sound from the street construction below; a sleepy drunk on front door steps; a banging door in the dark stair. Oh yes, and other creature living with us in winter: itsy bitsy tiny mice. That’s the one thing I love to hate the most.

Otherwise, I love the straight view from living room window: an angel relief on the roof wall of church across the street, watching the ever bustling Charles and Franklin Street junction below. I love to take Damian to Mount Vernon Park; petting some dogs and watching fountains, with bonus once-a-year fireworks from our windows. I love going to Enoch Pratt Library, two times a week for the kid, and being an early bird in its annual book sale. We saw all kinds of parade from the best place; went to Walters Museum exactly in 2-hour free admission; I just walked across the street to Beadazzled and started making jewelries. I love walking to Baltimore Basilica if I needed to whisper a pray; further to Lexington Market for a few piece of doughnuts or fresh veggies; even further to Inner Harbor, and Federal Hill at the furthest. We didn’t miss all kind of restaurants along Charles Street; we merely believe my home-cooked meal still tastes better. I thought it was the healthiest time of my life ever since I finished school.

We seldom met our neighbors, but it’s a good mix of students, single moms, old folks, all kind of workers, and I particularly remember a man who loved to wear his kilt –sometimes along a bagpipe. By October 2004 there was only a couple of tenants lived in the building, I think we moved out at the same week before it would be emptied in November. The front door was already broken, other than tenants used the laundry room as well. Me and my husband felt relieve when we finally moved out though we also miss all the conveniences we had.

A couple of weeks ago, this old building was being demolished by Archdiocese Of Baltimore -the owner of the property. When I saw a great piece of Rochambeau fallen apart, my mind was wandering on those old days we had lived there. A short one year compare to one hundred ages it had. As me and my husband had backgrounds in architecture, we could not avoid talking about preservationist versus religions, maybe politics involved. A few local things we did not comprehend as foreigners. Why not demolish the rigid parking garage right beside it instead. We agree that this prime location in a city was best used as a residential/commercial. Other than its historic value, modestly it’s because we experienced living there. With a way of life that was not only belong to particular people, just for Baltimore City residents.

Cokelat

Ternyata aku seorang cokelat. Nggak tahu benar atau nggak. Nggak penting. Brown You're brown, a credible, stable color that's reminiscent of fine wood, rich leather, and wistful melancholy. Most likely, you're a logical, practical person ruled more by your head than your heart. With your inquisitive mind and insatiable curiosity, you're probably a great problem solver. And you always gather all of the facts before coming to a timely, informed decision. Easily intrigued, you're constantly finding new ways to challenge your mind, whether it's by reading the newspaper, playing a trivia game, or composing a piece of music. Brown is an impartial, neutral color, which means you tend to see the difference between fact and opinion easily and are open to many points of view. Trustworthy and steady, you really are a brown at heart.

[Dua lumit]

Runi terkasih,
Terimakasih untuk sayap indahmu. Percayalah, kamu bisa terbang tanpa aku.
Kamu tahu, bukan padamu aku marah.

Benar, aku berbeda. Entah apapun usahaku menghapus semua itu. Dan sekarang.... mata tua itu jadi saksi. Sekaligus pemantik bara dalam darahku.

Runi terkasih,

[Sekelumit]

...Love had given me wings so I must fly....

Tetapi selalu terngiang kala kita bersama. Denganmu aku mampu melayang walau canggung, mampu menukik tanpa harus terbentur. Karenamu aku menyusuri jembatan pelangi, menggarisi senja yang jingga, menyibak setapak cakrawala.

Aku harus terbang, Jalu. Karena aku diberi sayap untuk melayang. Setinggi yang aku sanggup, sejauh yang aku mampu. Tidakkah kaulihat, sayapku mampu mengarung jarak? Tidakkah kau ecap nikmat kapas awan di ketinggian udara?

Tetapi sekarang sayapku patah. Tergeletak di tanah basah menggiris ngilu. Aku berusaha menyeret sayap-sayapku, tapi bumi terlalu kuat menawanku. Aku rawat luka-lukanya supaya sembuh seperti dulu, tapi patahannya malah memberati ragaku.

Aku mengerti kamu marah, Jalu.

Check This Out

Please check out my new collection here: Jingga Gems. Thanks!

My collections also displayed at Watermark Gallery, downtown Baltimore. The owner is Manzar, a great painting artist who also taught me to see a jewelry as a piece of art, rather than just making it for a good sale. Some of them are good compositions, color harmony, flowing-vision, scale, texture, distraction, etc. In fact, there is a major on jewelry design at some universities in US. Well, to be frankly, I did not think of my pieces that way though, simply just following my hand, intuition, trial & error. But since I know now, I guess that would be a great way to start doing it as I would design something else....

My Piece on BeadStyle Mag Community

I just feel ecstatic. Please click here: Forum Challenge to see my piece on Web Forum Challenge 3 of BeadStyle magazine online, and look for my name beside the picture along with edited description. All other pieces are gorgeous and I learned a lot from them.

I subscribed for Beadstyle magazine online December last year which has given me more ideas to create beaded jewelries. Then last January I joined the beaders forum which has about 60 000 members from around the world. Turned out I learn from others for more vision and better techniques. It just happened that on early February they have Web Forum Challenge for the third time and I decided to participate. It is not a formal competition whatsoever and members could send their piece as long as it has a theme of ‘monochromatic’ with certain guidelines.

I spent one night to create the necklace and took another day to take pictures. Just two days before due date I sent the pics files to the organizer who is a beader and also a writer of the magazine. She gave me compliment for my necklace which I really appreciated. And finally… yesterday they display all the results on Beadstyle magazine online! I’m so glad because I do need promotion on my jewelry… :)

Negara Maju dan Perda Larangan Merokok

Tulisan ini dibuat begitu membaca soal perda larangan merokok di KCM, selesai nggak sampai satu jam. Tadinya dikirim ke satu harian ibukota, tapi nggak yakin alamat emailnya benar. Mumpung belum lama, saya publish di sini aja.... :)

**********

Marilah kita lihat Singapura misalnya.

Saung Baru

Belakangan aku lagi asik main di saung baru.
Memilih nama, menata letak, memberi warna, memasukkan barang, mematut-matut, 'masang bola' (meminjam istilah Damian), tidur lambat. Setelah hampir beres rasanya mau bersantai-santai, belum mood nulis.

But hei, aku mau ajak kalian main ke sana.

see u there!

Spark of Colors

I love colors. They don’t just exist and standstills but give us ideas and feelings. They are such a perfect art created by The One that none of them are bad. They are just simply beautiful... don't you think? That is why going to a bead store for me is like a kid in the candy store. Colorful candy store that is. Yup, it’s so beautiful and yummy I just want to grab everything until my stomach get hurts. Well, in beads case: until I got pocket-ache…. :)

Using colors is just so common but it’s really challenging once you combine them. If you still remember my Spark of Stones project, I haven’t use as much colors since I just started. But I couldn’t resist myself to explore more on colors and shapes and materials. So I made some new beaded jewelry in new tones. I have some notion though that I designed them based on my taste, which made me surprised that ones of not-my-favorite piece got sold and the ones that I think look better just flirt me to be worn.

So please take a moment and click here: Spark of Stones – 3, and tell me: which one would you like best? (Just put the photo number if you like). You could also check out the link at sidebar where I also put a new feature: a chatterbox so you could splash some ideas or suggestions. Thanks so much!

Link!

Things went fast these days. I don't really have time to sit and think of what to write [oops, enough time to just sit and relax for sure]. We celebrated Damian's birthday two weeks ago, well we called it makan-makan actually. It felt like so many people coming since our apartment isn't that big but it was fun though, seeing these kids running around and the adults enjoying the foods we'd prepared [love to cook, love Indonesian food!]. We'll move to another apartment in Charles Village next month, so I'd been looking around some apartments that eventually made us back to the first choice.

We went to Baltimore Book Festival last week, two days in a row, where we could get good bargain books (if not for free!). There was a tent for children where we accidently attended a money saving presentation for kids and Damian brought home a cute piggy bank afterwards. The lady really knew how to teach about money to kids and it amazed me when some of them, age 4-6, already knew that saving in a bank is better cause they can get interests! Last but not least, I've listed some new beaded jewelries I made on ebay which lead to not-as-expected sale since there are too many sellers. I haven't thought seriously of selling it other way though, it's still a spare-time hobby for me.

Anyway, I just add some links of new pictures of our summer time [sadly, our trip pics on New York and Washington DC all gone with the old laptop] here: Summer 2004
Damian's birthday pics here: Damian Bday
and Thanks to everybody who'd come: Hilman-Rina-Raka, Gunar-Ndew-Dhika-Ndew's Mom, Riko, Arti, Rizky, Daisy, Kurnia-Betty-Mesakh-Sadrakh, Haris-Leli-Diva-Baheera-Leli's Mom, and Nicky Lubis who'd taken beautiful pics here: Damian Bday in BW
Check out my other Spark of Stones project here: Spark of Stones - 1+2
[As usual, you can find all the links at the sidebar!]

So, that's all for now. Welcome lovely autumn...

Spark of Stones: New Project

Beadazzled. This shop at the corner of the street, opposite of my apartment, just had an appeal and started to call me. I went through the entry door and dazzled by the sights. Beads are everywhere. Hanging on the walls [no empty walls at all!], in the baskets, in the bowls, in the showcase, just everywhere I turn my head. Beads of Stones, Glass, Crystals, Woods, Acrylics, Silver, Gold, Bones… did I leave anything out? And in such beautiful colors….in all shades and gradations, simply as rainbows.

That’s how I started to create jewelry, well… necklaces for most. I borrow books from EPFL library to learn from scratch, and further on the designs. Right now I mostly use semi-precious stones which are familiar here [e.g. Amethyst, Garnet, Crystal Quartz, Sodalite], combined with any other beads to match. And when I made enough, I started to think of selling it. I know I have to touch up more on the pictures, but you never start if you think too much, right? The first time my necklace sold on eBay with my hubby’s help, I jumped up and down, followed with my beloved Damian who had no idea why I acted that way. He just knew I was happy :). Well, this is one of my hobbies I just like to do in my spare time, and when it turns out hanging on someone else’s collar, it just feels….gooood….

Please click here: Spark of Stones [or link at the sidebar] to see my other designs. Write to me if you’re interested!

IKEA (Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd)

The name sounds familiar, but little has known –or cared- what this abbreviation stands for.

I won’t explain here what Ikea means, or its history, since you could find it easily on the website. It is just interesting for me because every time a person or family from my home country came here to stay, we would gladly fetch them to Ikea. Why? Because we like the simple, modern design, cute utensils, colorful fabric, easy to mix and match, etc. Not to mention the price is cheap since we have to assemble the furniture at home, and the mass products make it easy for us to see the neighbors get the same item that we have. And we always run for sale season, never have enough of things that eventually will get broken in less than a year.

I know the brand since in school but we could only see the catalogue. Then when I worked in interior design consultant, the catalogue was like a bible. We brought it to the furniture contractor, showed them what we want, and voila! The furniture will be delivered in less than a month, exactly looked like Ikea. Once I also saw my client arguing with her husband (who’s Swede) insisting to take design from Ikea that she love, but her husband rejected saying Ikea was junk in his home country that he would never buy it. (I finally left the company because it was way too busy copying easy-to-sell design than made it on its own). I had a friend back in Singapore who went to Ikea for refreshment whenever he felt stress at work, but not to buy any single thing! I guess in this case we just call Ikea as furni-zoo, shall we?

Anyway, do you know that Ingvar Kamprad, who founded furniture retail chain IKEA, has overtaken American computer giant, owner of Microsoft`s Bill Gates as the world`s richest man? He has a personal fortune of $53 billion compare to Bill Gates at $47 billion, according to the latest list of the world`s rich in U.S. Forbes magazine. He also known to be on the frugal side, flying economy and driving an old Volvo, and keeps his wealth secure in tax-haven Switzerland. Wow, how we make him even richer than before! ( And I was wondering if he still prefers using Ikea than any kind of Ethan Allen or Broyhill!)

On the other side, Ikea actively surveys its customer in various themes (USA Today and CBS News). Here are some facts in the survey which are quite interesting:
1.Guys with messy sock drawers have sex three times more per month than those who organize their socks.
2.Those couples that don't have closet organizers argue three times less per month than those who do.
3.Austrians love their bedrooms, but seldom make love in them. Malaysians often have sex in their bedrooms, but don't get much sleep there. Spaniards and North Americans were most likely to keep their bedrooms private, while almost half of Chinese allowed their friends access.
4.Three-quarters make their bed daily; people who frequently change their mattresses have more sex; and the most common fixture of a bedroom is the alarm clock.

Well, what do you think?
