IKEA (Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd)

The name sounds familiar, but little has known –or cared- what this abbreviation stands for.

I won’t explain here what Ikea means, or its history, since you could find it easily on the website. It is just interesting for me because every time a person or family from my home country came here to stay, we would gladly fetch them to Ikea. Why? Because we like the simple, modern design, cute utensils, colorful fabric, easy to mix and match, etc. Not to mention the price is cheap since we have to assemble the furniture at home, and the mass products make it easy for us to see the neighbors get the same item that we have. And we always run for sale season, never have enough of things that eventually will get broken in less than a year.

I know the brand since in school but we could only see the catalogue. Then when I worked in interior design consultant, the catalogue was like a bible. We brought it to the furniture contractor, showed them what we want, and voila! The furniture will be delivered in less than a month, exactly looked like Ikea. Once I also saw my client arguing with her husband (who’s Swede) insisting to take design from Ikea that she love, but her husband rejected saying Ikea was junk in his home country that he would never buy it. (I finally left the company because it was way too busy copying easy-to-sell design than made it on its own). I had a friend back in Singapore who went to Ikea for refreshment whenever he felt stress at work, but not to buy any single thing! I guess in this case we just call Ikea as furni-zoo, shall we?

Anyway, do you know that Ingvar Kamprad, who founded furniture retail chain IKEA, has overtaken American computer giant, owner of Microsoft`s Bill Gates as the world`s richest man? He has a personal fortune of $53 billion compare to Bill Gates at $47 billion, according to the latest list of the world`s rich in U.S. Forbes magazine. He also known to be on the frugal side, flying economy and driving an old Volvo, and keeps his wealth secure in tax-haven Switzerland. Wow, how we make him even richer than before! ( And I was wondering if he still prefers using Ikea than any kind of Ethan Allen or Broyhill!)

On the other side, Ikea actively surveys its customer in various themes (USA Today and CBS News). Here are some facts in the survey which are quite interesting:
1.Guys with messy sock drawers have sex three times more per month than those who organize their socks.
2.Those couples that don't have closet organizers argue three times less per month than those who do.
3.Austrians love their bedrooms, but seldom make love in them. Malaysians often have sex in their bedrooms, but don't get much sleep there. Spaniards and North Americans were most likely to keep their bedrooms private, while almost half of Chinese allowed their friends access.
4.Three-quarters make their bed daily; people who frequently change their mattresses have more sex; and the most common fixture of a bedroom is the alarm clock.

Well, what do you think?
